Managing Up

One of the questions I frequently get in sessions is how to effectively manage up. Ultimately managers at every level of an organization know that without a solid relationship with the senior leaders they report to, it is significantly more challenging to achieve results.

The best relationships focus not on pleasing the boss, but on establishing an alliance between partners with the same long-term goals.

There are several ways to develop this relationship:
1. Know what is important to the leader and work to support it.
2. Offer solutions, not just problems.
3. Keep the leader up-to-date on any issues he or she is expected to own.
4. Ask directly for help when necessary, rather than waiting for the leader to offer it.

What else can you do to manage up in your organization?
