Software Simulation Tips

Many organizations use screenshot recording software (e.g., Captivate, Storyline, Camtasia) to enable learners to simulate completing tasks in software programs. Learners enter data, click buttons, make selections, and complete calculations just as they would while using the software on the job. Below are several tips you may find helpful when recording software simulations:

  • Record in a quiet location where you won’t be disturbed. Turn off email, instant messaging, and other computer notifications while you’re recording.
  • If possible, close all software except the application you are recording and the screenshot recording software.
  • Print your script and practice the steps before doing the actual recording.
  • Before you begin recording, open the application you will record (unless launching the application is a part of the task simulation).
  • Use a clean or generic desktop background if your desktop will be part of your recordings. You can hide all icons if needed.
  • Go slowly through the task steps as you record.
  • Use the hotkeys you designated to pause, print a screen, and stop a recording.
  • Use the software’s “Print Screen” functionality for rollover menus, drop-down boxes, etc. to be sure you record all necessary screenshots. It’s better to have extra screenshots that you can easily delete than to miss a critical step in a task.
